Boston Steakhouses

Since I haven't been posting recently, I've decided to post some of my opinions on restaurants in Boston. Let's start with everyone's (I hope) favorite...STEAK (hmmm....steak...)

Abe & Louie's
For the appetizer we had a seared Ahi steak with a ginger soy sauce. The Ahi was sashimi quality, but the Ahi wasn't particularly inspiring. It tasted like it came off a manufacturing plant line. The New York Sirloin cut too lacked inspiration. Well marbled (the fat in the steak that adds flavor), but it just didn't stand out to me for some reason. The atmosphere was relatively bright for an upscale steakhouse and noisy too. However, my only complaint was that the expected dress code was a bit lax for a restaurant positioning itself to be of such a caliber. But I guess that's what you get for being right on Bolyston St. across from the Prudential Mall. GRADE: C+

Blackfin Chophouse
A surf 'n turf restaurant in the Back Bay next to the Prudential and Copley Malls. However, I didn't get a chance to try any steak at the Blackfin. Look for my seafood review of it instead.

Grill 23
The king of Boston steakhouses if you ask me. Located in between the Back Bay and the Theater District, you'll often see executives from the nearby offices closing deals over dinner here at Grill 23. The atmosphere is surprising light, open and a bit noisy. The noise level isn't overwhelming, but it's just loud enough to not feel like you need to whisper as you eat dinner. Having been here twice, I can't wait to go here again. I assure you that Grill 23 is worth every dollar you spend. You will however, have to spend a pretty penny should you eat here. The calamari was light and fluffy with a nice amount of kick to the batter, I think it's the best calamari I've ever had hands down. The crab cake was excellent was well. A crispy outside layer with succulent large lumps of crab meat on the inside. The presentation alone was compelling enough.

And now, the steaks...the Kansas City Strip was excellent since the bone in cut protected the meat and kept it nice and juicy. The Porterhouse is ridiculously huge and an excellent value since you get two different cuts of steak. A Porterhouse has both a New York Strip and a Filet Mignon with a T bone connecting them together. The Kobe Beef Delmonico was a bit dry and a bit of a disappointment actually. However, the Kobe Beef Cap Steak was scintillating. Absolutely amazing. Words cannot describe how good this steak was. Simply put, it tasted like heaven was melting in my mouth. It was so tender and firm and full of a nice balanced saltiness with an immense amount of flavor. The buttered asparagus were extremely flavorful without losing their natural flavor with just the right amount of saltiness. And you couldn't go wrong with the vanilla bean creme brulee. However, if you wanted to go have more choices for desert you could head to Finale instead which is only two blocks away. Service was impecable as the wait staff was attentive, respectful and well knowledged. The ULTIMATE steakhouse. GRADE: A++

The Capital Grille
Located at the corner of Mass Ave. and Newbury St. right across from the Hynes Convention Center stop, The Capital Grille can't fail you if you're serious about some good steak. I've been here twice and you just cannot go wrong here. The main issue I have with the restaurant is how dark and stuffy the restaurant is. It's nearly suffocating as you feel as if you must talk in a hushed voice over your meal. The calamari with hot cherry peppers had some kick to it, but the batter tasted a bit heavy. The dry aged sirloin steak was consistent and tasty with a nice sized porportion. And the double cut lamb chops were excellent that were accomodated with some mint jelly, they tasted excellent and were well done. And for dessert, the fresh berries in vanilla creme were great. It gave some fresh and bright flavors contrasted with the silkiness of the creme. An excellent choice. And the key lime pie, if you like it, was good too. It was the second time for myself having key lime pie and I found it to be pretty good. Tart and refreshing, the pie filling was very smooth. GRADE: B / B+

On Sunday we just got hit with 15 inches of snow. That's the one thing with living in the Northeast is that you'll never know when the blizzard will come. But this winter has been pretty mild. The most mild of the 4 winters I've been through.

On Friday, I gave my first talk ever at large group. I spoke on Ephesians 2:4-10, more like 2:1-10 also. I thought it went pretty bad, especially since my practice run was my actual talk. At any rate, a lot of people said it was really good, but I must admit that I'm having a lot of trouble believing them. It's been hard to draw the line between mere modesty and actual constructive points. If you were there, please let me know what you liked, didn't like and where I could have used significant improvement. Thanks.

i love black and white photographs. and how they leave so much up to imagination. it's simple yet so understated it gets your mind wandering to recreate what it really must have been like just at that particular moment. it's elegant without being over the top.

on  a side note, scrubs is hilarious it's at it's funniest when JD tries to imagine what something was actually like.
